The $60,000 trade that offset lost baseball playoff revenue

For businesses dependent on event-driven demand, the risk is sometimes the game that never happens.

The business challenge

Companies in multi-location hospitality face uncertainty that can change the value of a sale, a promotional promise or an operating budget. The commercial question is whether the outcome can be defined precisely enough to make a better decision before it happens.

What actually happened

Reuters reported that a hospitality group operating 25 bars, many near Dodger Stadium, purchased a $60,000 Kalshi position that paid if the Dodgers failed to advance to the World Series. After the team’s elimination, Kalshi said the position returned nearly twice the original stake and helped offset lost business from additional playoff nights.

Why the mechanism matters

This was not a customer promotion. It was a revenue-protection hedge: one outcome led to fewer high-demand operating days, while a contract tied to that outcome produced an offsetting payment. The correct hedge size depends on contribution margin lost, not headline revenue.

How IncentivPay or PMPS could apply

Illustrative scenario, not a claim that Los Angeles hospitality group used our technology.

PMPS Intelligence could ingest calendar exposure, historical game-day sales, venue geography and relevant event markets to estimate the value of lost home games. It could surface candidate downside hedges, their basis risk, liquidity and expected cost for human approval. IncentivPay could separately operate fan-facing promotions.

What a merchant should measure

  • Protected contribution margin relative to downside exposure
  • Hedge cost, slippage and actual proceeds
  • Revenue volatility across event days
  • Forecast error and event-to-sales correlation

Evidence and limitations

The nearly 2× reported return is not the business’s total financial profit; no complete cost and lost-margin reconciliation is public. Risk markets may not track business exposure exactly.
